The Wolfle-Trunkey House & Garage is significant for its connections to two influential Spokane businessmen of the early twentieth century: mining entrepreneur Conrad Wolfle and wholesale grocery magnate Harvey Trunkey. Completed in 1912, the home was purchased by Wolfle for $30,000 and later became the residence of Trunkey, whose business grew to become one of Spokane’s longest-running and most successful wholesale grocery operations.

The interior of the Wolfle-Trunkey House is particularly fine. Woodwork on the main floor of the house includes unpainted quartersawn oak paneling, white oak floors and finely grained oak trim. Leaded glass casement windows reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D Martin House "Tree of Life" motif remain on the house as well as interior French doors featuring a Japanese screen design. A grand oak staircase with a Prairie motif balustrade rises to the second floor on the south side of the house from the large entry foyer.

The house is also notable as the work of architect Earl W. Morrison and builder A.T. Johnson, a partnership responsible for many of Spokane’s finest early twentieth-century residences. Known as Spokane’s “boy genius,” Morrison trained in Chicago and introduced the Prairie Style to the city, designing numerous distinguished homes throughout the South Hill and Rockwood neighborhoods. Together, Morrison and Johnson created high-style residences for many of Spokane’s leading business families, helping shape the character of the city’s most prestigious historic neighborhoods. Today, the Wolfle-Trunkey House stands as an excellent and well-preserved example of Prairie Style architecture, retaining a high degree of historic integrity and craftsmanship. The house is a contributing property in the Rockwood National Register Historic District, listed in 1997.
