Built in 1910, the Matt and Mamie Baumgartner House at 1125 S. Bernard Street is a striking South Hill residence designed by renowned Spokane architect Earl W. Morrison and constructed by builder Amil T. Johnson. Commissioned for Mathias “Matt” Baumgartner, a prominent figure in Spokane’s mining industry, the home combines the form of an American Foursquare with an eclectic blend of Neoclassical and Colonial Revival influences. Distinctive features include its expansive front porch, two-story columned façade, Palladian windows, and a dramatic pointed-arch dormer that reflects Morrison’s early architectural experimentation.

The Baumgartner House is significant as an early work of Morrison, who earned the nickname “the boy architect” for designing grand residences while still a student. Morrison would go on to become one of Washington’s most influential architects, designing notable homes, apartment buildings, schools, and commercial structures throughout the state. Today, the Baumgartner House remains a well-preserved example of his creative early work and continues to contribute to the historic character of Spokane’s South Hill neighborhoods.
