Occident Schoolhouse
Operating from 1902 to its closure in 1968, the Occident Schoolhouse, also known as "The Little Red Schoolhouse," is credited as being the last functional schoolhouse in the state of Washington. This one room schoolhouse offered education to rural students in the Rimrock and Palisades area for decades, sometimes closing the school for fun picnics and student celebrations. Upon its establishment, the rural schoolhouse was part of Occident School District #149, but was later absorbed into Spokane School District #81. Spokane School District #81 had plans on utilizing the historic schoolhouse after its closure in 1968, but plans fell through and the district sold the property in 1981. Recently, the schoolhouse has been converted into a private residence in an effort to preserve and reuse this unique piece of regional history. Today, the Occident Schoolhouse remains a landmark of rural education history in the Spokane area.
The Occident Schoolhouse was listed on the Washington Heritage Register on April 17, 1970 but is not listed on the Spokane or National Registers.
