Completed in 1913, the Jenkins Building at 802 N. Monroe was built for Colonel D. P. Jenkins, the original owner of the building and major figure in the development of Spokane. The Jenkins Building is significant for its association with the city’s population boom of the early twentieth century. To accommodate the surging population of immigrants and laborers, apartment buildings, such as the Jenkins Building, rapidly populated downtown spaces to offer in-city dwellings for the working class. The apartment building was designed by Albert Held, a prominent architect responsible for designing several of Spokane’s earliest apartment buildings, such as the San Marco and Breslin Apartments. The apartments Held designed, including the Jenkins Building, have been registered under the National Register Nomination “Apartment Buildings by Albert Held Thematic Group.”
