Historic Properties of Spokane
Breslin Apartments
Built in 1910, the Breslin Apartments at 729 S. Bernard St. serves as one of the first in-city multi-family dwellings in Spokane. Built during Spokane’s rapid population boom of the early twentieth century, the Breslin Apartments were intended to offer luxury in-city housing to middle and upper class families. The construction of luxury apartment buildings around this time indicates a massive shift from families seeking settlement in single family dwellings outside the city’s center, to living within the heart of the city in multi-family buildings. The Breslin Apartments were designed by one of Spokane’s most prominent architects, Albert Held. Held designed several luxury apartment complexes in and around downtown Spokane, the most prominent examples being the Amman, Knickerbocker, and San Marco apartment buildings. More prominent buildings designed by Held include the Globe Hotel, the Holley-Mason Building, St. Luke’s Hospital, and the Williams House.
