Historic Properties of Spokane
Symons Block
Built in 1917 for prominent Spokane business investor Colonel Thomas W. Symons, the Symons Block in downtown Spokane is both architecturally and historically significant. Designed by prominent architects Archibald Rigg and Roland Vantyne, the Symons block is representative of the Neoclassical Style, evident with the building’s symmetrical and orderly facade, dentalled cornices, and prominent use of white terracotta. The Symons Block is associated with the early radio industry in Spokane, housing the city’s first radio station in 1922, known today as KXLY. The radio station was established and operated by the owner's son, T. W. Symons Jr., a prominent pioneer of the radio broadcasting industry.
