Spokane County Courthouse
Built in 1894, the Spokane County Courthouse is a prominent feature in Spokane’s skyline. The Spokane County Courthouse was designed by architect Willis A. Ritchie, whose brilliant design won an architectural contest in 1893. Ritchie’s design has proven itself to be one of the finest examples of French Renaissance architecture in the west, evident with the structure’s classical ornamentation, symmetrical facade, decorative dormer windows, and sharply roofed turrets. The unique dry pressed brick adorning the exterior was the first to be produced in the area; previously such brick had to be shipped from the East Coast. Since 1895, the Spokane County Courthouse has continued to house Spokane County government, serving the community for over 130 years.
The Spokane County Courthouse was first listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, becoming locally protected on the Spokane Register a dozen years later.
