The Edwin Smith House, a charming Tudor Revival residential property, is located on the western edge of the West Central neighborhood. Designed by architect Charles R. Wood, the Edwin Smith House serves as an excellent example of the Tudor Revival style (1890’s-1940’s), characterized by its steep, front facing gabled rooflines, abundant use of half-timbering, and use of mixed materials (stucco, lumber, and brick). The Edwin Smith House was built in 1912 for Edwin A. Smith, notable editor of the Cowles Publishing Company’s farm journals for forty years. Smith was a vocal supporter of the American farmer, and was an avid crusader for improving farm life. Through his editorials and publications, he tried to alleviate the isolation of the western farm family.

The Edwin Smith House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 23, 1985, joining the Spokane Register less than two months later on October 21, 1985.
